John Watson ASIB screencap appreciation post part IV
BAMF!John….lovely. This was one of my favourite scenes. :)
“[…] What’s amazing is, it doesn’t matter how many times you say they’re not going to kiss, they’re not together, they love each other but that’s the point, it’s the single most imperishable friendship in the whole of English literature that’s the way it works, it’s totally unspoken that they love each other in a way that men can do but they’re not gay for each other. But it doesn’t matter how many times you say that, an entire forest of dirty fiction has arisen as a result. And long may it continue, I don’t know what it’s about… [laugh]
[…] I’m very aware of it [slash fiction]. God I’m aware of it because people come and talk about it everytime we do any kind of event but I supposed the history of it is going way back, I think it started with Kirk and Spock. Anything like that has a kind of slash element and it’s an interesting thing because you’re brought up on the idea that heterosexual men get off on the notion of lesbians but the flip side of it is just as powerful, particularly I think for girls of a certain age. The idea of two sexy men getting it on is a really powerful aphrodisiac.”— Mark Gatiss in Gay Times.
I have lost so much respect for Mark Gatiss for these comments.
The anti-gay/anti-shipping sentiments about Sherlock/John really bother me, especially the condescending dig at fic writers and fic readers. Everyone who’s reblogging these comments (with no sense of irony), are you aware that he’s cheapened and demeaned what you do, what you love and spend hours of your life dedicated to? All the stories you’ve written, all the art you’ve made, all the gifs you’ve created, all the time you’ve spent loving everything Sherlockian….he’s reduced it into one generic stereotype and made it out to be this:
“I think it started with Kirk and Spock. Anything like that has a kind of slash element and it’s an interesting thing because you’re brought up on the idea that heterosexual men get off on the notion of lesbians but the flip side of it is just as powerful, particularly I think for girls of a certain age. The idea of two sexy men getting it on is a really powerful aphrodisiac.”
Not all Sherlock fic writers write porn and not all readers of Sherlock fics read them to have something to wank to. It’s so bloody insulting and I feel furious about his patronising attitude, especially considering how he and the other writers took such efforts to include all that gay subtext between Sherlock and John in the show. Why put it in there at all then? HYPOCRITES. They are taking such pains to tick all the boxes for the different fan bases and they insist on wording things so they remain open to interpretation…never once stating flat out that Sherlock is asexual (or straight or gay), just going with the “he’s not interested in sex, it’s all about brainwork” angle, which continues to leave the door open for everyone - slashers, bisexuals, homosexuals, asexuals, heterosexuals, etc. They want everyone to love them and won’t take a definite, categorical stance - and that is fine, as long as they refrain from insulting anyone. But now Mark Gatiss has made insulting remarks, to a large portion of the Sherlock fan base, and I find it rather galling and shocking and extremely disappointing.

And while I’m on the subject, sadly, I’ve started to lose respect for Benedict Cumberbatch too, thanks to the recent comments he’s made and the quotes I’ve read in the articles coming out at the moment - they are full of distancing language (he refers to John as “Watson”) and disclaimers and hints that his relationship with Irene is a romance, and he seems genuinely put off by the idea of Sherlock/John being anything more than platonic. Is it because he’s single now and he’s worried he’s being seen as possibly gay in real life? An interview bit that bothered me:
- Interviewer (Heat magazine): There’s been a lot of talk about how your chemistry with Martin Freeman is quite homoerotic.
BC: “Sherlock and Watson do keep getting mistaken for being gay in the show. And that happens again in the new series. Fair enough - - they’re living together and there is a bit of that finishing-each-other’s sentences type of relationship going on. But the first story in the new series is a proper love story for Holmes. I don’t want to give anything away, but on one level it’s a proper romance with this beautiful, clever woman called Irene Adler.”
Is it really? A proper love story…a proper romance? That’s not what everyone else is saying.

As for Martin Freeman, here are his thoughts:
Martin Freeman has, however, described the BBC series Sherlock as having “the gayest story in the history of television”.
At the Baftas, where he picked up the best supporting actor award for playing Dr Watson to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Holmes, Freeman said that he saw Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s characters as being profoundly in love.
“It’s about the relationship between the two men and how it develops and how it changes,” Freeman tells me. “It is about the things that wind each other up and the things that they genuinely love about one another as well. We all certainly saw it as a love story. These two people do love and kind of need each other in a slightly dysfunctional way, but it is a relationship that works. They get results.”
Martin Freeman, you are an amazing, wonderful man. You are so secure in your sexuality, you don’t care what other people think. You love and respect your fans, and you even seem to be a bit of an unabashed John/Sherlock shipper yourself and you don’t apologise for that. Thank you for being you. Please, never change! ♥
